FRIDAY READS (#20)

It’s finally the weekend again!

It has been a crazy busy week for me. With getting back to the gym, business and resume classes, job interviews, it’s been hectic.

Tonight is my last class for the week and then it will definitely be time to indulge in some binge reading.

10025305I’m currently four chapters into Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare, the second book in the Infernal Devices series. You can click here to find it on Goodreads. I am really enjoying this series so far. I just finished Clockwork Angel and my review will be coming up for that soon so make sure you keep an eye out for that.

8755776Next on my list to read is City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare. Going back to the Mortal Instruments series, this is the fifth book in the series. You can click here to find it on Goodreads. I’m so excited to get back into this series and to figure out what my main man Jace is up to.

Other than that I don’t have much else planned. I’m in the mood where I want to read every single book in the world right now so I have no idea what I’m going to pick up next!

I hope everyone has a great weekend, let me know what you are reading this weekend!

BOOK REVIEW: EMBRACE THE SUCK BY STEPHEN MADDEN

20525598Title: Embrace the Suck
Author: Stephen Madden
Published: 2014 by HyperWave
256 pages
Source: Published
Click here to find it on Goodreads

Embrace the Suck is Madden’s personal memoir of his venture into the world of Crossfit. In the past year and a half I have really gotten into fitness but I have never worked up the courage to try crossfit, so I figured why not start reading about it to see if it is something I would be interested in doing. And let me tell you, from the sounds of this book it does not sound easy or even fun at all, but I still very badly want to try it.

I knew nothing of crossfit so I enjoyed him explaining how it works, like with the WOD (workout of the day). I found it to be quite motivational. Madden was a lot older and not as fit as everyone else he worked out with, but I loved how he replayed his thought processes about not giving up. Your body can withstand a lot, it’s your mind that you have to convince.

This was a very fun, quick and easy read. If you need some motivational reading, you should probably check this out. While reading it I found myself relating and then when I finally finished all I wanted to do was go for some long sprints and lift some heavy ass weights.

I rated this book a 4/5 stars and recommend it to those of you who are fitness obsessed like myself!

FRIDAY READS (#17)

What is this?! Mallory is actually making a post?!? Sorry I’ve been absent lately, but full time work and full time school has been leaving me basically no free time. I haven’t been doing much reading at all unfortunately. But this weekend I plan to utilize my time a lot better and get some reading done!

I’m going to be working on two books this weekend. First is Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones (click here to find it on Goodreads). I bought this when I went to Munro’s Book Store in Victoria last summer so it’s about time I finally get to this one. Plus I really want to watch the Studio Ghibli film and I won’t let myself until I read it!

And second one I’ll be starting is The DUFF: Designated Ugly Fat Friend by Kody Keplinger (click here to find it on Goodreads). This is our discussion book of the month and I’m super excited about this.

FRIDAY READS (#16)

Is it Friday already?
It’s been a weird week. Where I live, we’ve been getting some pretty nasty weather lately, so I feel like I barely went to school this week. Somehow, the week flew by and I barely even did anything. I would have liked to have gotten more reading done, but I spent some time visiting my mom and didn’t get the chance to pull out my book. This weekend we are supposed to be getting yet an other snow storm here, so I am planning on staying inside, where it’s nice and quiet and cozy, to get ahead on both my school work and my reading. I am currently reading three books:

20639274I started to read Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan earlier this month, but I haven’t continued on with it for quite a while because it’s on my cell phone. I always end up getting tired of reading on such a small screen. I haven’t really decided if I wanted to keep reading this one, or just forget about it. I’m not that far in, but I really did like what I read and do think that it has great potential. If you’ve read this by any chance, please let me know if it is worth it!

20613470I am finally on the third book in the Throne of Glass series, Heir of Fire by Sarah J Maas. As of right now, I am only 35 pages in. I really loved the ending of the second book, so I can’t wait until the action picks up in this one! I really wanted to have finished all three of the Throne of Glass books in January because I received them as Christmas gifts, but will most likely carry this one on into February. I have it in hard cover and it looks pretty chunky!

20706757The last book that I picked up was You Can, You Will by Joel Osteen. I’ve never read anything like this before, but my mom loves the author and really wanted me to read this one. It’s in the christian/inspirational book genre and it’s under 200 pages, so I figured I would give it a shot. I could use some positive inspiration in my life.

See how random my book picks are? I went from new adult romance, to young adult fantasy, to adult christian… Yeah. I would definitely be happy to be able to get ahead in reading Heir of Fire this weekend. I am really loving the Throne of Glass series so far, and I heard that the books just keep getting better and better as the series progresses. Let me know what you’re weekend reading plans are and what you think about my book picks in the comments below!

FRIDAY READS (#12)

IMG_2311

I am SO happy that it’s FRIDAY! I was supposed to have class this morning, but my teacher decided to cancel it. It’s a good thing, because we are getting a ton of snow today here in New Brunswick! I am getting the most out of my wonderful snow day while journaling, reading, making lists and cleaning. This was my first official week back to school after the holidays and although I do have a great schedule this semester, I spent most of my evenings on pinterest and wordpress than I did cleaning my place up. I am trying to get organized and start crossing things off of my famous to-do list, but my couch is just SO comfy. I don’t want to move!

This weekend, I hope to FINISH reading Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. This is such an awesome YA fantasy read. I really am loving it, so why haven’t I finished it yet? Hmmm, laziness I suppose. Once I finish that book, I am planning on picking up The Mine by John A. Heldt, which Mallory and I will be reviewing for the author. Mallory has been raving about this, so I am looking forward to starting it. You can find The Mine on Goodreads HERE.

How are you spending your Friday? Let us know in the comments below!

MALLORY’S #12DAYSOFBOOKMAS READ-A-THON TBR

10846780_10152837584945465_1444511147_nSo as Maria mentioned in her post, this read-a-thon is taking place on Instagram. And what perfect timing for a read-a-thon! Everyone will be finishing school and work and it’ll be all read read read time! So here are the books I plan to read during this time.

1. My True Love Gave to Me by various authors. I’ve already finished one story so this shouldn’t take me very long.
2. Scarlet by Marissa Meyer. Why has it taken me so long to get to this book? Super pumped for this one.
3. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World by Bryan Lee O’Malley. Second book in the graphic novel series. These are fun and take no time at all.
4. Scott Pilgrim & the Infinite Sadness by Bryan Lee O’Malley. This is the third in the series.
5. Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins. It’s about time I am getting to this series!

Hopefully I will be able to make it through all these and more. I want to get a lot of reading done this month. But so far, I’m slacking. This read-a-thon should help me pick it up though. Let us know what you plan on reading too! And don’t forget to check out our updates on Instagram 🙂

FRIDAY READS (#11)

Happy Friday to everyone! So far i’ve spent mine in bed… It’s just one of those mornings I guess, but I am going to get up and start being productive as SOON as I post this. I just finished my last week of classes and am heading into exams. I have to say, I’m pretty lucky this year. My exam schedule seems pretty “doable”, so I am hoping to keep my good reading momentum going. I’ve actually been having a good reading week! Now that classes are over, I will be spending all of my time either studying, reading, or procrastinating. I’m sure next week will be interesting…

Now onto my Friday book pick:

15768409

Today I am definitely continuing The Retribution of Mara Dyer. I am currently only 30 pages in, I am loving the Mara Dyer trilogy and can’t wait to post a full series review for you guys.

I was contemplating on taking a quick break from the creepy-ness to pick up something either in the urban fantasy or new adult genre, but still haven’t decided yet… I really want to read Written in Red by Anne Bishop, so I might pick that up if I feel like it. I’m craving some new adult romance ever since I read Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover, but have no idea what to read. I know that some NA is amazing, but others are just “meh”, so if you have any recommendations, do comment below!

15711341

So that is basically my weekend reading plans. My boyfriend is working 12 hour shifts and I’m not working at all right now, so I should be able to get a good chunk of reading done if nothing gets in the way.

Question: Is there any December read-a-thons going on that I should take part of?
I’m sure everyone is trying to get as much reading done as possible before the new year. December can be a pretty crazy month though, with everyone preparing for Christmas.

One more thing… I’d like to wish my blog partner Mallory a very happy birthday today! Hope you have a great day girl 🙂 and it’s friday so don’t forget to celebrate!

Have a great weekend everyone!

MALLORY’S NOVEMBER WRAP UP + DECEMBER TBR

Well I don’t feel like I read very much in November at all. I had a busy month and I switched jobs. My plan in December is to make more time for reading, especially since I’ll be getting quite a bit of time off for Christmas.

So on to the wrap up. I read a total of nine books this month.

1. The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater ★★★
I found myself getting lost throughout this a lot. Definitely nowhere near as good as the first book.

2. The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson ★★★★★
Probably my favorite book of the month. Loved loved loved it. We have already posted our discussion on this book and you can find that here: https://readsbymandm.wordpress.com/2014/11/15/book-discussion-the-kiss-of-deception-by-mary-e-pearson/

3. Redwall by Brian Jacques ★★★★
Loved this book. I have already posted my review and you can find that here: https://readsbymandm.wordpress.com/2014/11/18/book-review-redwall-by-brian-jacques/

4. This is Sarah by Ally Malinenko ★★★★
Maria and I received this from the author herself and we have already posted our review. Check that out here: https://readsbymandm.wordpress.com/2014/11/20/book-review-this-is-sarah-by-ally-malinenko/

5. Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover ★★★★★
Adored this book. We have a discussion coming up for this one sometime next week so be sure to check that out.

6. The Lake of Souls by Darren Shan ★★★★★
The 10th book in the Saga of Darren Shan series. This series is so great. I have a full series review coming up within the next few days.

7. The Lord of Shadows by Darren Shan ★★★★★
The 11th book in the Saga of Darren Shan series. Just as good as the rest.

8. The Sons of Destiny by Darren Shan ★★★★★
The 12th and final book in the Saga of Darren Shan. Definitely not how I was expecting the series to end but loved it. I’m now sad that it is over. Be sure to checkout my series review within the next couple days.

9. The Lorax by Dr. Seuss ★★★★★
Obviously this deserves five stars. So adorable and now I want to watch the movie again!

Okay so for December I made quite a large TBR, as always. Depending on how much time I have I might switch things up but we will see as the month goes on how I feel.

1. My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories by various authors. This is our discussion book of the month.
2. I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson. I’m currently reading this and it is my book clubs choice of the month.
3. The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken. Starting this one AS SOON as I finish my current read.
4. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. Carrying this over from November.
5. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson. I want to read this with my sister on Christmas Eve. She doesn’t know that yet though.
6. The Grinch Who Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss. Have already read this before but The Grinch is my all time favorite Christmas story/movie.
7. An Abundance of Katherines by John Green.
8. Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World by Brian Lee O’Malley.
9. Scott Pilgrim & the Infinite Sadness by Brian Lee O’Malley.
10. A Grimm Warning by Chris Colfer.
11. The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman.
12. The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman.
13. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer.
14. Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi.
15. Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins.
16. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline.
17. Scarlet by Marissa Meyer.

So as you can see I have some super easy reads on there that shouldn’t take long at all. So I’m going to try and make my way through the TBR as much as I can. I always find myself slacking each December but we will see how this one goes.

How was your November? What are you planning on reading in December? Let me know in the comments.
