“This box may seem empty,

But there’s more than meets the eye…”

Sam Miller seems like an ordinary 12-year-old boy, until he discovers a mysterious box. Suddenly, he lands in a magical world in which he must battle deadly pirates, savage warriors, giant man-eating spiders, and a fire-wielding tyrant. To survive, Sam must overcome his fears, solve riddles, and most of all, be extraordinary.

Maria’s Thoughts:
This is the story of a boy named Sam who lives a very ordinary life. Like most young fellows, he has a very wild imagination. Sam starts to get tired of doing the same boring things day after day after day… Until one day, when Sam is busy spending the afternoon outdoors with his family, he comes across a hatbox addressed to him in his grandfathers old barn. Sam’s grandfather has been gone a very long time. He has always looked up to him. At first, what’s inside the the mysterious box seems like nothing to Sam. It is only when he solves the secret riddle, only for him to see, that he is introduced to a world of magic. Sam is soon forced to face his worst fears, like pirates and spiders, in order to help his people.

There is no doubt in my mind that little ones will love being read this story before getting tucked in at night. I’m sure they will immediately relate to the main character, Sam. And with some imagination, they too will be immersed in this adventurous tale. Extremely creative and captivating, the author even had me feeling extraordinary.

After a little bit of GoodReads browsing, I learned that Extraordinary Sam was initially created as a bedtime story for the authors boys. I can’t help but hope that they grow up with this story close to their hearts and someday share it with kids of their own.

Mallory’s thoughts:
This is the kind of book I would have loved as a child. Although it seems targeted more towards young boys, I was such a tomboy that these were the stories I craved.

Sam is your typical young boy always seeking out adventures. Awake or asleep, his imagination takes off and carries him through some crazy and fun scenarios. Little does he know he is about to go on the adventure of his lifetime!

In such a short book, I really became attached to Sam. I saw a little bit of my younger self in him and was able to relate that way. This book brought back so many memories of being young and letting your imagination wander off. It was an absolute pleasure to read and I loved the way everything turned out.

If you have young children, I would highly recommend reading this story with them! It would be perfect for a bed time story.

FRIDAY READS (#7)

It’s almost time for me to put my feet up and relax for the weekend. I don’t have much planned, hopefully going to see the new Maze Runner movie. Other than that I hope to just sit on my butt and relax and get a ton of reading and blog work done.

This weekend I am reading The Enchantress Returns by Chris Colfer. This is the second book in The Land of Stories series. It is a super fun and cute read and I should be finishing this within the next hour.

I have watched the first couple seasons of Glee and Chris Colfer was always my favourite actor on that show. After reading this book I am now an even more massive fan of him.

Alex and Conner Bailey are teenage twins going through a hard time in their life. The twins grandmother gives them the story book they used to always read as small children and then one night they both accidentally fall into the story book. They find themselves in a strange place full of magic and creatures and they meet the famous characters of the classic fairy tales they read while growing up. But unfortunately leaving is not going to be as easy as they thought.

First I want to talk about the overall presentation of this book. The front and back covers are absolutely stunning and draws you in immediately. We are also provided with a map of The Land of Stories which always earns bonus points.

Colfer absolutely sucks you into the story. He mixes the classic fairy tales with modern day and it is a perfect combination. The characters are all so well done that you can’t help but fall in love with each and every one of them. It is fast paced and an absolutely charming story that I never wanted to end. Thankfully this is a series so I cannot wait to get my hands on the second book as I know I am going to devour it and love every minute of it.

My favourite quotes:
“Right now, we’re living in an ugly chapter of our lives, but books always get better!”
“Even in the worst of situations – even when it seems no one in the world appreciates you – as long as you have hope, everything can get better”
“Sometimes we forget about our own advantages because we focus on what we don’t have. Just because you have to work a little harder at something that seems easier to others doesn’t mean you’re without your own talents”

I listened to the audiobook for this one and I highly suggest if you are wanting to read this one to get the audiobook to go along with it. Colfer reads it himself and it is perfection. He personifies each character so well and puts a lot of emotion into the story telling. Needless to say, I will not hesitate to check out any of his work in the future.

An easy 5/5 star rating from me. Now let’s hope the rest of the series is just as exciting and fabulous!
