Mice occupy the abbey of Redwall. Docile creatures who have sworn to never harm any other animals. Until one day, Cluny the Scourge and his horde of rats make their way to the abbey. They want to take over the land but the mice are not giving up without a fight. Can the mice defeat Cluny and the rats and maintain the peaceful life they have at the abbey?

Redwall starts out with a bang. Immediately we are thrown into action. First chapter we are introduced to the mice and second chapter we meet Cluny on his way to battle. As a book for young reader, don’t let it fool you. There are a ton of battle scenes and a lot of deaths. I was surprised by the mature content of it. That being said, I would not say this book is gruesome in any way. Especially with the characters being mice and rats it makes the battle a little easier to read about.

I immediately fell in love with this book. War and battle stories are not usually something I go for but I very much enjoyed this. Matthias, our main character, is so incredibly loveable, as well as lots of the other mice of the abbey. I found the diversity and personalities of the characters superbly done. From mice and rats to foxes, badgers, hares and sparrows, each character had their own individuality throughout. This story really kept me intrigued from beginning to end and I cannot wait to read more from this series.

4/5 stars.
